Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City, Missouri
Kansas City, Missouri is definitely one of my personal travel preferences. Not only is it a great city to explore, but it’s also a great city for student tours. As you come into the Kansas City area by train, car, or airplane, you will immediately notice the modernistic, contemporary theme of Kansas City’s tallest buildings. It’s also an excellent idea to drive into the downtown area at night, as you will see the light-art the downtown area has to offer. This destination is a fabulous spot to not only recreationally enjoy but also to educate yourself further with the many sites the city has to offer.
The best educational destination, in my opinion, is the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art located next to the University of Missouri-Kansas City campus. This museum hosts over 34,500 different pieces of artwork, all from various cultures that span 5,000 years of human civilization. In addition to this being a great spot for various Kansas City student tours, admission is absolutely free, this makes visiting the museum a must.
The museum hosts two very different guided tours, both of which (and this only sweetens the deal) are free. One tour called Highlights of American Art, will take you through a whole bunch of American exhibits, highlighting famous artists such as Thomas Cole, George Caleb Bingham, and Marsden Hartley. The second tour, Making a Masterpiece, is a tour centered on the actual history of the museum itself. While on this tour, you and your class will experience many different types of art through the museum’s various exhibits. Both of these tours are great educational attractions and perfect for any Kansas City student travel.
After these two great group tours, you might be a bit hungry and wondering if there is good food nearby. Fortunately for your group, the museum itself hosts two dining establishments. The Rozelle Court Restaurant, for example, is designed after an Italian open-air food court and offers self-serve, buffet-style food at a great price. Second, a sit-down restaurant called The Café is a superb alternative for those groups seeking a high-society, more sleek experience.
