Lewis and Clark Three Day Tour

Commemorate the journey that changed the nation just 200 years ago when two explorers embarked on a momentous journey.

Day 1	Celilo Falls The expedition arrived at what was Celilo Falls, a dangerous set of rapids and successive falls. The dam system on the Columbia River has since inundated this former salmon fishing spot for Native Americans. Today, a park marks the spot where Lewis and Clark stopped. Deschutes River Mouth Where the Deschutes River empties into the Columbia is where Lewis and Clark paused to survey the falls and explore the area. The Dalles Here the river became very rough, and after realizing there was no way they could portage over the slippery rocks, the expedition decided to shoot the rapids instead.
Day 2	Rock Fort This is the spot where the expedition made camp to make celestial observations, dry articles from the river and repair their canoes. They exchanged gifts with seventeen Native Americans from Washington who camped alongside the explorers. Lewis and Clark took vocabulary notes on the two native nations while here. Columbia Gorge Discovery Center and Museum This museum will take your group back 40 million years to when a massive geologic force determined the future of the land. Hood River County Historical Museum Located in an historic home, the museum holds a rare collection of drawings by Hood River schoolchildren in 1905 commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Corps of Discovery. Beacon Rock State Park A tall volcanic obelisk on the Washington side of the Columbia named for its visibility. It also marks the beginning of the tidewater flow from the Pacific Ocean. Mouth of the Sandy River On November 2, 1805, Lewis and Clark passed this river, marking the first time that explorers had reached land already mapped by whites. Lewis and Clark State Park exists at this point where they first identified plants for botanical discovery. The Governor Hotel A large mural in the lobby depicts the historic Lewis and Clark expedition.
Day 3	Fort Clatsop From December 7, 1805 to March 23, 1806, the expedition camped here after being warmly greeted by Chief Concomly. Today's Fort Clatsop is a living history monument to the Expedition. It was here that most of their important work was done including reworking their journals and analyzing scientific data. Chief Concomly Memorial This memorial is dedicated to the chief and friendship with the explorers. Ecola Beach State Park This is the place where Clark and 14 others (including Sacajawea) journeyed to see a whale that had washed ashore. Your group can take a 7 1/2 mile hike to retrace their steps over Tillamook Head. Lewis and Clark Salt Works The explorers' crew created salt boiling cairns here to produce enough salt to cure the meat they had hunted.
